首先,我们来看一道阅读理解题:

Passage 1:

【2019 英语二真题】

(1)Diamonds are said to be a girl’s best friend, but they have victims far beyond the problems of breakup. According to a book in publishing now in Germany, the diamond industry is far from pure. The money produced by the South African mines has been known to help finance wars, countries in which many people have only known the terror and fear of fleeing their homes.

(2)No one knows exactly how many conflict diamonds are in circulation today, but the number is estimated to be between two and five percent. In 2000, the United Nations adopted a resolution to avoid purchasing any conflict diamonds. However, in 2018, the European Union regretted to find that it still had possible conflict diamonds by failing to check Madagascar’s record.

(3)But there is still hope. The diamond industry

started an international tracking system; it buys and sells diamonds, trying to prevent the selling of conflict diamonds. So, what are the origins of these diamonds? Some of them have unknown origins, so it is difficult to determine where they are coming from. However, miners in countries such as Zimbabwe and Congo are clearly facing dangerous working conditions and unfair wages. The pressure of the aforementioned international tracking system has encouraged the African government to implement laws to make sure that it maintains its customers, and therefore ensures that they are buying non-conflict diamonds.

(4)In conclusion, we need to be more aware when buying diamonds. We need to make sure that we are buying only non-conflict diamonds. Although the diamond industry has taken some steps toward preventing the sale of conflict diamonds,

it is still our responsibility as consumers to demand transparency and hold them accountable.
