Should Genetically Modified Food be Stopped?
Along with the increased commercialization and planting of a range of genetically modified (GM) crops globally, the safety of genetically modified crops and genetically modified food (GMF) has become a hot topic and major public concern. In recent years, the issue of GMF has become one of the hottest debating topics around the society. So, should GMF be stopped?
Some think that GMF should not be stopped. GM food is new with both good prospects for growth and potential threats. Likewise, GM technology can allow crops to become resistant to drought and pests as well as produce a higher yield, whereas a vast majority of people hold that GMF can cause diseases which are immune to antibiotics. Moreover, some experts declare that people who consume to such food stand high chances of getting cancer. As the long-term effects on health are unknown, many people prefer to stay away from GM food.
As a scientific researcher, I think GMF should not be stopped. GM technology is one of cores of the knowledge economy in the 21th century. GMF is the inevitable product as the result of human productivity and GM technology progress. We pin on GM technology heavy hopes that it will better our life quality and get rid of poverty and hunger. And we cherish the hopes that scientists can do more researches about its health effects, and producers can mark GM food to ensure food safety and consumers' benefits.
