As he was running happily with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The mill was on the other side of the river, and there was no any bridges[brid?] over the water. The colt could not decide[di'said] whether['weð?] he could walk across[?' kr?s] it.

Looking around, he saw an old cow eating grass on the bank. So he asked her: “Aunt Cow, is the water deep? Can I walk across it?” “not at all ! ” the cow said . “It’s just as high as my knee [ni?], you can go across it. It’s safe.”

knee:[ni?]膝盖;膝关节;

Then the colt was ready to go across the river. Just then , a squirrel ['skwir?l] in the tree shouted [?a?t] to him :

“Little horse ,don’t go into the water .It’s too deep .

You'll drown [dra?n]! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river.” So the colt drew[dru?] back his legs quickly.

He told [t??ld] his mother his experience[ik'spi?ri?ns] on the way. His mother laughed and said to him, “My child, don't always listen to others. You'd better go and try it by yourself. Then you'll find the truth.”

“No, I want to try myself”, answered the colt. Then he walked across the river carefully.
