Trace Strategy
Translation involves the process of reading-deconstructing and
Rewriting-reconstructing. Thesourcetext is very basic for translators to get information and understand to author‟s meaning, and translator‟s version is the target text for readers to comprehend. This understanding and reproduction need to get traceofthetext and constitutesrelationship between the source text and the target text. Therefore, translators should completely understand theoriginaltext and make some obscure information more clear for the readers.
For instance, in Qian Zhongshu‟s Wei Cheng, there are some kinds of trace strategy of deconstruction which rest in idioms and colloquialisms.
Firstly, the idioms and colloquialisms. As we all known that idioms and colloquialisms are involved in strong native cultures which may not be easily understood by people from a different cultural background. Sometimes there are counterparts for the idioms and colloquialisms in the target language. Sometimes there are not counterparts for the idioms and colloquialisms, but the meaning can be grasped through the lines. So translators should attach importance to them and deal with them flexibly.
For axample, Mr.Qian has written in his work, “我宁可他们瞧不起我,骂我饭桶。”(钱钟书, 1980:42). The corresponding translation is “I‟d rather have them scorn me and call me a …rice bucket‟ .”(Kelly&Mao, 2003:181). We may say that “饭桶”is a typical Chinese term and …rice bucket‟ is literal translation that the foreigners couldn‟t understand. As a matter of fact, the translator has maintained Chinese characteristics and the meaning can easily by comprehended through the context. Because “scorn”means “despise” for target traders, and the …rice bucket‟ also bears the same meaning.
There is also an example. 鸿渐咬牙来个中西合璧的咒骂:“To hell, 滚你妈的蛋!”(钱钟书, 1980:262). The corresponding translation is “Hong-jean ground his teeth and let out a bilingual curse: …Go to hell, you mother‟s egg!‟.”(Kelly&Mao, 2003:272). The translation is not very correct. “you mother‟s egg” is totally strange for target readers, and even through the context, it couldn‟t be exactly understood. It
should be translated as“Go to hell, you bastard!”. So when it comes to trace strategy, translators should be very flexible.
Supplement Strategy
Derrida once said about deconstruction that therelationship betweenanybinaryhierarchy is alwaysunstableand problematic. There is no authority and text is something pretty open and empty surely exists. Therefore, supplement is necessary to fill the empty.
In Mr.Qian‟s Wei Cheng,he used a great deal of metaphor to make the language and content more vivid, and his works is very humorous. Metaphor is a method of speech making comparison between two similar things. It mainly consists of three components: the object, the image and the sense. Metaphor embraces culture elements and the author‟s individual character which sometimes is difficult to understood by target readers. In another word, there exits empty and should be supplemented. The most effective way is to translate metaphor by simile and to add words like“as”to reduce the shock of metaphor
For example, in Mr.Qian‟s Wei Cheng he has written that “飞机接连光顾,大有绝世佳人一顾倾城、再顾倾国的风度。”(钱钟书, 1980:36).The translation is as following: “The Plants kept coming in much the same manner as the peerless beauty whose …one glance could conquer a city and whose second glance could vanquish an empire‟.”(Kelly&Mao, 2003:40). In this sentence, the translator added “as”, showing that the plants‟manner is like a beauty and the meaning is much clear for target readers.
