1. A Reservation for Four

(W=Waiter, G=Guest)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith are visiting Xi’an. They want to reserve a table for dinner. Waiter: The Oriental Restaurant. May I help you?

G: I’d like to reserve a table for four.

W: For what time, sir?

G: 6:30 this evening.

W: I am terribly sorry, sir. All the tables are reserved until 7:30.

G: Why is this?

W: Well, sir, a big group is arriving at six. Would a reservation for 7:30 be too late? G: Yes, I’m afraid so.

W: May I suggest our coffee shop, sir? I am sure they will have tables available. G: All right. I’ll try the coffee shop, sir? Could you transfer my call?

W: Sure. Please hold on, sir.I’ll put you right through.

G: Thank you very much.

W: Coffee shop, may I help you?

G: Yes, I want a table for four tonight at 6:30.

W: Very well, sir. A table for four at 6:30. May I know your name, please?

G: Mr. Smith.

W: Thank you for calling, Mr. Smith. I have reserved a table in your name.

G: Thank you very much. Good-bye.

2. Ordering a Meal

Mr. Barton has made a reservation in the restaurant and now he is in the restaurant.

(W=Waitress,M=Mr. Barton)

Waitress: Good evening, Sir. Have you got a reservation?

Mr. Barton: Yes. For 7:00. The name is Barton.

Waitress: (The Waitress checks the list on her lectern) could you follow me, please?

(The guest follows the waitress to his table)

Will this table be all right?

Mr. Barton: This table is just by the dance floor. Could we have another one?

W: Please come this way. (The guest is taken to the table in the back)

Here is the menu.

M: Thank you.

W: May I have your order?

M: Yes, I’ll have a steak and chips, please.

W: How would you like your steak, rare, medium, or well-done?

M: I’d like mine well-done.

W: Would you like your steak with a baked potato or French fries?

M: French fries, please.

W:Would you care for a salad, Sir?

M: Yes, I want a Russian salad.

W: And what would like to drink with your meal?

M: I’d like to order wine.

W: Ill bring the wine list right away….

3. Booking a Table at a Restaurant Contents:

A headwaiter is receiving a telephone call from a local customer to book a table for tonight. Staff: Good morning. Best Food Restaurant .May I help you?

Customer:I'd like to reserve a table in your Sichuan Restaurant.

Staff: What time is it for?

Customer:We’ll come around eight o’clock tonight.

Staff: I’m sorry. We have so many guests this evening.

Customer:How long is the wait?

Staff: Nine o’clock should be OK.

Customer:We are group of six.

Staff: It’s OK. Your name, please?

Customer:My name is Peter Yang. By the way, we’d like a table with a view of the garden.
