My dad was the coach of my team, and my mom kept score. So my sister, not old enough to stay home alone, was forced to come to all my games. I remember looking toward the stands for my mother's approval and seeing my sister's face, confused. It was obvious that she wasn't excited, but she cheered along with the crowd anyway. On the car ride home, my parents and I would relive the game. My sister sat in the back seat with me in silence, not knowing how or when to enter the conversation. Often, she would say, “Good game, Brad.” I wo uld smile and thank her but never took it seriously. She couldn't possibly know whether I had played well or not.It wasn't until I reached high school that I realized how popular she was, and I was referred to as “Christie's little brother.” I played bask etball in high school, and although Christie wasn't forced to attend my games anymore, she still came to cheer me every week. In the last game of the last season, she came with a large group of friends. Printed on her shirt, in big bright red letters, were the words “BRAD'S SISTER.” Suddenly I was embarrassed, not for her presence, but for my previous attitude to her praise.Kicki left for college after that game. I finally have the remote control all to myself. However, watching TV alone has turned out to be boring. I went to visit her at college duringa weekend, and as I stood outside her dorm, waiting for her to come out, a friend of hers whom I didn't know walked past me and asked, “Hey, aren't you Christie's brother?” I smiled broadly and said proudly, “Yeah, I am. I'm Christie's brother.”4、How did Brad feel about being an only child when he was young?A.Boring.B.Awesome.C.Tough.D.Awful.5、Why did Christie go to Brad's games when he was in primary school?A.She hoped to know more about Brad.B. She was interested in basketball games.C.She was too young to be left alone at home.D. She wanted to spend more time with her family.6、Why did Brad feel embarrassed according to the last but one paragraph?A.He treated Christie's praise lightly before.B.He forgot Christie's presence at his last game.C. He saw the big bright red letters on Christi's shirt.D.He received unwanted attention from Christie's friends.7、What can be inferred about Christie?A.She was proud of Brad.B. She didn't like watching TV.C.She enjoyed Brd's calling her Kicki.D.She seldom went home during college.Researchers from Texas A&M University have developed a new bioremediation technology(生物整治技术)using plant-based material and fungi(真菌)that could clean up per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances.Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substance, also called “forever chemicals” or PFAS, are found in soil, water, and even human and animal blood and may be harmful to humans and other species. They are found just about everywhere, from food wrappers to clothing. These chemicals may affect the immune system and may cause liver damage. Extremely high exposures to PFAS may also be linked to cancer.“PFAS do not degrade easily in the environment and are poisonous even in a very low concentration,” said Susie Dai, associate professor from Texas A&M. “They must be removed and destroyed to prevent human exposure and negative impacts on the ecosystem. PFAS are so stable and they can occur in water in a very low concentration and you have to concentrate them and then destroy them.”The only way to actually get rid of these “forever chemicals” is by burning them, which is a long and expensive process. But Texas A&M researchers have found a new way to use a plant-based material that adsorbs the pollutants. As explained by ScienceDirect, adsorption is “The use of solids for removing substances from either gas or liquid.” The adsorbent material is then consumed by microbial fungi. The team recently published their findings for the process framework, which they call RAPIMER, in Nature.“The plant's cell wall material serves as a framework to adsorb the PFAS,” Dai explained. “Then this material and the adsorbed chemical serve as food for a microbial fungus. Then it's gone, and you don't have the disposal problem.”This sustainable PFAS clean-up system could be mass-produced for commercial use, leading to a better way to remove these chemical pollutants from the environment. It could also come in handy as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers creating PFAS thresholds(阈值) to its water quality standards.8、What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?A.PFAS's existing forms.B.PFAS's doubtful origins.C. PFAS's potential dangers.D.PFAS's wide applications.9、What did Susie Dai say about PFAS?A.They are unstable.B.They degrade easily in the environment.C.They survive longer in water than in the air.D. They are poisonous even in a low concentration.10、What happens after the plant-based material adsorbs the pollutants?A.The material gets eaten.B. The material becomes solid.C.The material falls into small pieces.D.The material goes on to adsorb fungi.11、What is the author's attitude towards the plant-based material?A.Indifferent.B.Worried.C.Positive.D.Reserved.ever a concern for growers of plants currently grown inside large greenhouses. Vegetables are increasingly being grown indoors, using an advanced form of growing called controlled environment agriculture, a method that has the potential to help feed the planet, even while it threatens to further warm it.Controlled environment agriculture has many advantages. Crops are not subject to unexpected extreme weather. Furthermore, these greenhouses can produce more food withfewer pesticides and less water. With computer-controlled temperatures and nutrients, the plants grow with less water and produce much higher yields. Above all, the produce can be bred for flavor, instead of for tolerance to heat, rain and long-distance transportation. The carbon footprint of any given greenhouse tomato can vary quite a bit depending on energy sources, surrounding temperatures and natural light. But various studies have estimated that, on average, the production of a pound of tomatoes in an American or northern European greenhouse releases 3 to 3.5 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere. That is about 6 times the caron footprint of a field tomato, even taking into account the emissions from refrigerated trucks that often transport field vegetables hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach consumers. Greenhouses, by contrast, can be built near major population centers.Nevertheless, in a rapidly warming world, should we be increasing agriculture's contribution by moving some of it i ndoors? “We have little choice,” say advocates. “With the global population expected to grow by 25 percent to nearly 10 billion people by 2050, food production will need to increase by 60 percent to 100 percent. With freshwater supplies and land suitable for farming decreasing, and droughts getting worse due to climate change, where will this additional food come from?”12、What does the underlined part “a big change” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.The rapid increase of population.B. The threatens of warming the planet.C.The way to deal with natural disasters.D. The tendency to grow vegetables indoors.13、What does controlled environment agriculture mainly focus on?A.Making crops taste good.B.Planting crops with less water.C.Growing crops in extreme weather.D.Transporting crops from a long distance.14、What do we know about American greenhouse tomatoes?A.They are not high-yielding crops.B.They are not really environmentally friendly.C.They are grown far from population centers.D.They are mainly exported to norther Europe.15、Which of the following statements may the advocates agree with?A. Greenhouse planting is a necessary temporizing measure.B. Greenhouse planting is tailored for small-population nations.C. Greenhouse planting can help spread the idea of healthy eating.D. Greenhouse planting should be stopped from warming the world.二、七选五16、根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

At the same time, Hadley showed up to check on the scene.Lloyd had calmed her down and was in the process of getting his fingers painted. Then Hadley just put his hand in there. So it’s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honoring the egg. Some traditions are simple, like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter breads. Others upgrade the egg into a fancy art, like the heavily jewel-covered “eggs” that were favored by the Russians starting in the 19th century. One ancient form of egg art is egg painting, which comes to us from Ukraine. For centuries, Ukrainians have been drawing complicated patterns on eggs. Contemporary artists have followed this tradition and adapted the traditional methods to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious, and delicate. Eggs are, too.“There’s something about their delicate nature that crazily appeals to me,” says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast. Several years ago, she became interested in egg painting and learned the traditional Ukrainian technique to draw her very modern characters. “I’ve broken eggs atevery stage of the process — from the very beginning to the very, very end.”But there’s an appeal in that vulnerability. “There’s part of this sickening horror that I kind of like, the horror of knowing you’re walking on the edge with this, knowing that it could all fall apart at any second.” Chast’s designs, such as a worried man alone in a tiny boat, reflect that delicateness.Traditional Ukrainian decorated eggs also spoke to those fears. The complex and detailed patterns were believed to offer protection against evil.Egg painting art, dating back to 300 B.C., was later absorbed into the Christian church. The old symbols, however, still survive. A decorated egg with a bird on it, given to a young married couple, is a wish for children.A decorated egg thrown into the field would be a wish for a good harvest.28. What do we learn about the decorated “eggs” in RussiaA. They are shaped like jewel cases.B. They are heavily painted in red.C. They are favored as a form of art.D. They are valued by the rich.29. Why have contemporary artists continued the tradition of egg paintingA. Because eggs serve as a symbol of the coming of spring.B. Because eggs provide a source of protein in winter’s end.C. Because eggs provide a unique surface to paint on.D. Because eggs reflect the anxieties of people today.30. Which of the following best explains “vulnerability” underlined in paragraph 5A. Delicateness.B. Technique.C. Fear.D. Anxiety.31. What is the main idea of the textA. Egg painting art preserves traditional and popular symbols.B. Different cultures have different ways of honoring the egg.C. Ukrainian egg painting art appeals to contemporary artists.D. Egg painting art continues and develops in pace with time.DImagine you enter a car with no steering wheel, no brake or accelerator pedals (踏板). Under a voice-activated command, you say an address. “The fastest route will take us 15.3 minutes. Should I take it ” You say “yes” and you are on your way. The car responds and starts moving all by itself. All you have to do is to sit back and relax. How strange would it be if, one day in the future, everyone had such a car No crazy driving, no quarrels, no cutting in; traffic laws would be respected and driving much safer. On the other hand, imagine the cost savings for local police enforcement (强制执行) and town budgets without all those speeding and parking tickets.A new technology has the potential to change modern society thoroughly. There’s no question that self-driving vehicles could be anenormous benefit. The potential for safer cars means accident statistics would drop: some 94% of road accidents in the U.S. involve human error. Older drivers and visually-or physically-disabled people would gain a new level of freedom. Maintaining safe speeds and being electric, self-driving cars would sharply reduce pollution levels and dependency on non-renewable fuels. Roads would be quieter, people safer. But we must also consider the impact of the new technology on those who now depend on driving for their living. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in May 2015 there were 505,560 registered school bus drivers. The American Trucking Association lists approximately 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. The companies developing self-driving vehicles should be partnering with state and federal authorities to offer retraining for this massive workforce, many of whom will be displaced by the new technology.New technologies will, and should, be developed. This is how society moves forward. However, progress can’t be one-sided. It is necessary for the companies and state agencies involved to consider the moral consequences of these potential changes to build a better future for all.32. What would be the effect of the wide use of driverless carsA. More policemen would inspect the streets.B. People would never feel angry about the traffic.C. It would save local governments a lot of money.D. Traffic regulations would be a thing of the past.33. How would the elderly and the disabled benefit from driverless carsA. They would get rid of air pollution.B. They could enjoy greater mobility.C. They would suffer no road accidents.D. They could go anywhere they want.34. What would be the negative effect of driverless carsA. The conflict between labor and management would sharpen.B. Many drivers would have to find new ways of earning a living.C. Drivers would have a hard time adapting to new road conditions.D. The gap between various departments of society would be widened.35. What does the author suggest businesses and the government doA. Enable everyone to benefit from new technologies.B. Keep pace with technological developments.C. Make new technologies affordable to everyone.D. Popularize the use of new technologies and devices.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Light helps our body maintain an internal clock, but artificial light at night can disturb the rest and repair that should happen during the sleep. New research suggests that even when our eyes are closed, a small amount of light can disrupt the way our bodies normally keep our blood sugar within a healthy range. In the study published in Sciences on Monday, scientists asked 20 participants aged 19 to 36 tospend two nights in their lab. On the first night of sleep, the volunteers slept in a very dark room. For their second night of sleep, half of the group slept with streetlights through a window, and half spent their second night in a dark room.During the trial, all participants were connected to devices that measured different markers of their sleep quality. They were each connected via a special tube, allowing researchers to collect samples without waking the individual. Researchers also recorded participants’ heart rates and brain waves. When the volunteers awoke in the morning, the team tested their blood sugar and found that participants that slept in rooms with a dim light spent less time in deep sleep. In addition to having slightly worse blood sugar control, the group exposed to dim light had a higher heart rate on average. By comparison, those who spend two nights in the dark room had little difference in their blood sugar control. "They thought they slept well, but your brain knows that the lights are on," says Zee. “You should clearly pay attention to the light in your bedroom. If you can’t give up your night light, keep it dim and at floor level."Earlier work has linked exposure to light during sleep to an increased risk of obesity(肥胖)in women. Zee recommends, "Make sure that you start dimming your lights at least an hour or two before you go to bed to prepare your environment for sleep.”( )4. I guess you could say we preservationists look at buildings through a different lens that can see the swan in the ugly duckling. Looking back on the years of dirt and neglect, we'll realize that it’s our job as preservationists to teach people about the lessons learned from our historic resources. This is no doubt something we can always work harder on.Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removedin 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrible” piece of architecture and can't get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco, where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy(悲剧) that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but is meant to convey parts of our history. Our history, our collective history. Not just the history of huge events of World War 2 or Statehood, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market or how the people lived in the segregated(隔离的) plantation town and ultimately enjoyed a more egalitarian(平等主义的) living. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone's criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.( )12. What can we learn about preservationists from Paragraph l?A. They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.B. They pay great attention to modern buildings.C. They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.D. They focus on the value rather than the appearance.( )13. What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building?A. It's confusing.B. It’s pleasing.C. It's regrettable.D. It's unbelievable. H( )14. Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down?A. To wipe the history of the Victorian' era.B. To make land available for cheap housing.C. To work off the deep anger of the working class.D. To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.( )15. What might be the best title for the text?A. Are ugly buildings worth preserving?B. Is preservationists' work meaningless?C. Why do architects make ugly buildings?D. They created a machine called an electrolyzer. It can separate salty water into oxygen and hydrogen gases. The team described the process in a study recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Scientists have already collected solid evidence suggesting Mars once had huge amounts of water and (22) ______the planet likely holds a large supply today. But Mars is extremely cold. So, most of the water is thought to exist in the form of ice.The research team notes that any water that is not frozen is almost surely full of salt from the Martian soil. The usual methods for breaking water down into oxygen require the salt (23) ______(remove) first. This process can be complex, costly and harmful to the environment. The new method they invented (24) ______take salty water directly and convert it into oxygen and hydrogen. The team carried out experiments with high levels of magnesium salts, which scientists believe likely (25) ______(exist) on Mars. The researchers also carried out the tests at temperatures similar to the Red Planet's atmosphere. The U.S. space agency NASA has also experimented with technologies to produce oxygen on Mars. One device (26) ______(design) to do this will be tested as part of NASA's Perseverance mission. Perseverance is a new explorer vehicle, or rover, that is currently on its way to Mars. The engineering team said its method could even find valuable uses on Earth. "(27) ______ (demonstrate) these electrolyzers under demanding Martian conditions, we intend to also use them under (28) ______(mild) conditions on Earth," said Pralay Gayen, who is a postdoctoral researcher at Washington University and a lead writer of the study. "(29) ______ such use could be in defense industries, he added, "the method could create oxygen on demand for submarines. It may also be able to provide oxygen for researchers (30) ______(explore) new environments in the deep sea."Section BDirections: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. "It's no longer the case that the common man in England is (35) ______ to show he knows about food,“Tomes says. There was plenty of room for improvement. The problems with the nation's cuisine can be (36) ______ back to the Second World War. Before the war, much of Britain's food was imported and when German U-boats began attacking ships bringing food to the country, Britain went on rations (配给)."As rationing came to an end in the 1950s, technology picked up and was used to (37) ______ food," Tomes says. "And by then people were just happy to have a decent quantity of food in their kitchens. They weren't looking for cured meats, organic produce or beautiful presentation; they were looking for whatever they could get their hands on, and this (38) ______ for quantity to quality was popular for decades, meaning a generation was brought up with food that couldn't (39) ______ with neighboring France, Italy, Belgium or Spain. Before star chefs such as Oliver began making cooking fashionable, it was hard to find a restaurant in London that was open after 9 p.m. But in recent years the capital's culincvy (烹饪的)scene has developed to the point that it is now confident of its ability to (40)______ the tastes of any international visitor.III. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. There are many differences between American homes and traditional Chinese homes. Let's begin with the houses themselves. An American house usually has a yard, large or small. It mayhave a hedge (树篱),(41) ______ rarely is there a wall so high that a passer-by cannot see the windows. Usually the interior is shielded from exterior view only by window curtains or blinds. However, the image of a traditional Chinese house is one within four high walls. This is still (42) ______ in many places in the north of China today. The walls are often so high that only the roofs are (43) ______ from the outside. Solid gates separate the interior grounds from the outside world. In addition, there is usually a wall placed directly in front of the gates. It is believed that this shadow wall keeps the home from direct exposure to the unseen spirits when the gates are open.Inside the home, the contrast between China and America is (44) ______ . The emphasis within an American home is on (45)______ . There are not only doors to the bathrooms but also to the bedrooms, and often to the living room and even the kitchen. Space and possessions are (46) ______ . Parents have little liberty in the rooms of the children, and children cannot do what they want in those parts of the house regarded as pre-eminently their parents’ domain. In some American families, this rule of privacy (47)______ even to the husband and wife, so that each has a separate bedroom.Within the Chinese home, (48)______ , privacy hardly exists at all, except between members of opposite sexes who are not husband and wife. Chinese children, even in homes that have enough room, often share the same rooms with their parents until they reach adolescence. Not only do parents have freedom of action with the children's (49)______ , but the youngsters can also use the possessions of the parents if they can get their hands on them. If children damage their parents' possessions they are scolded, not because they touched things that were not theirs but because they are too young to handle them with proper care. The (50) ______ of privacy within the Chinese home finds its extreme expression in many well-to-do families of North China. Here the rooms are arranged in rows like the cars of a train. But instead of each room having a separate entrance, all the rooms are arranged in sequence, one leading into another. Thus, if there are five rooms, the front door of the house opens into the center room, which serves as the kitchen and dining room. There are two doors on opposite walls of the kitchen, each leading into a room which has (51)______ another door opening into the end rooms. Actual arrangements vary somewhat from family to family, but this simplified picture is (52) ______ true.Such an arrangement in living quarters would be very (53) ______ to Americans. But many Chinese adhere (坚守)a variation of the common linear arrangement even when they have more rooms and space in which to spread out. For in traditional Chinese culture the space within the four walls was considered as being one body. The American child's (54) ______ environment establishes strong lines of individual distinction within the home, but there is very little stress on separation of the home from the external world. The Chinese child's environment is exactly the opposite. He finds a home with (55) ______ cutting lines within it but separated by high walls and the strong gates from the outside world.41. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Over the past several decades, the U.S., Canada and Europe have received a great deal of media and even research attention over unusual phenomena and unsolved mysteries. These include UFOs as well as sightings and encounters with "nonhuman creatures”, such as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. Only recently has Latin America begun to receive some attention as well. Although the mysteries of the Aztec, Mayan, and Inca civilizations have been known for centuries, now the public is also becoming aware of unusual phenomena in countries such as Peru. The Nazca "lines" of Peru were discovered in the 1930s. These lines are deeply carved into a flat, stony plain, and form about 300 intricate (精美的)pictures of animals such as birds, a monkey, and a lizard. Seen at ground level, the designs are a senseless mess. The images are so large that they can only be viewed at a height of 1,000 feet 一meaning from an aircraft. Yet there were no aircraft in 300 B.C., when it is judged the designs were made. Nor were there then, or are there now, any nearby mountain ranges from which to view them. So how and why did the native people of Nazca create these marvelous designs? One answer appeared in 1969, when the German researcher and writer Erich von Daniken proposed that the lines were drawn by E.T.(外星人)as runways for their aircraft. The scientific community did not take long to laugh at and abandon von Daniken's theory. Over the years several other theories have been put forth, but none has been accepted by the scientific community.Today there is a new and heightened interest in the Nazca lines. It is a direct result of the creation of the internet. Currently there are over 60 sites dedicated to this mystery from Latin America's past, and even respected scientists have joined the discussion through e-mail and chat rooms. Will the internet help explain these unsolved mysteries? Perhaps it is a step in the right direction.56.Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?tin America has long received attention for unusual phenomena.B.Public attention is now directed towards countries like Peru.C.Public interest usually focuses on North America and Europe.D.Some ancient civilizations have unsolved mysteries.57.We can infer from the passage that, within a certain range, the higher up the lines are seen from, _______the images they present.A.the smallerB. the largerC. the clearerD. the brighter58.There has been increasing interest in the Nazca lines mainly because of _______.A.the participation of scientistsB. the emergence of the internetC. the birth of new theoriesD. the interest in the internet59.The author is ______about the role of the internet in solving mysteries.B. pessimisticC. uncertainD. optimistic(B)The BridgeClimbThe iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the world's longest steel-arch bridges, spanning an impressive 500 metres and standing proud above the sparkling Sydney Harbour. D. $1,332.(C)After World War II the glorification of an ever-larger GNP formed the basis of a new materialism, which became a holy obligation for all Japanese governments, businesses and trade unions. Anyone who mentioned the undesirable by-products of rapid economic growth was treated as a heretic (异教徒).Consequently, everything possible was done to make conditions easy for the manufacturers. Few dared to question the wisdom of dumping untreated waste into the nearest water body or untreated smoke into the atmosphere. This silence was maintained by union leaders as well as by most of the country’s radicals (激进分子);except for a few isolated voices, no one protested. An insistence on treatment of the various effluents, or liquid waste, would have resulted in expenditures on treatment equipment that in turn would have given rise to higher operating costs. Obviously, this would have meant higher prices for Japanese goods, and ultimately fewer sales and lower industrial growth and GNP.The pursuit of nothing but economic growth is illustrated by the response of the Japanese government to the American educational mission that visited Japan in 1947. After surveying Japan's educational program, the Americans suggested that the Japanese fill in their curriculum gap by creating departments in chemical and sanitary engineering. Immediately, chemical engineering departments were established in all of the country's universities and technical institutions. In contrast, the recommendation to form sanitary engineering departments was more or less ignored, because they could bring no profit. By 1960, only two second-rate universities, Kyoto and Hokkaido, were interested enough to open such departments. The reluctance to switch funds from production to conservation is explanation enough for a certain degree of pollution, but the situation was made worse by the type of technology the Japanese chose to adopt for their industrial expansion. For the most part, they simply copied American industrial methods. This meant that methods originally designed for use in a country that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific with lots of air and water to use as sewage receptacles (下水道)were adopted for an area a fraction of the size. Moreover, the Japanese diet was much more dependent on water as a source of fish and as an input in the irrigation of rice; consequently discharged wastes built up much more rapidly in the food chain.63.Which of the following words is closest in meaning to "glorification" (Para. 1)?A. worshipB. objectionC. criticismD. ignorance64 According to the passage, there were no measures in environmental protection after World War II in Japan because______.A.they were regarded as unnecessaryB.no one was much interested in themC.pollution was held as inevitable at that timeD.they would hold back economic development65.According to the logical clue of the passage, the second paragraph is an example to show that ______.A.Japan was markedly influenced by the U.S. in educationcation in Japan was not so developed as that in the U.S.C.the Japanese government concerned itself only about economic gainsD.Japanese educational institutions were much the same as those in the U.S.66.Which of the following is not a reason for the rapidity and intensity of pollution in Japan?A.The Japanese diet increased the waste in their food chain.B.The Japanese industrial revolution was generally modeled on that of America.C.No sanitary engineering departments were set up in higher institutions in Japan.D.Japan was unwilling to provide funds for the solution of environmental problems.Section C ( 8 分)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.How good are you at saying "no”? For many, ifs surprisingly difficult. (67) ______ Consider these scenarios:It's late in the day. That front-page package you've been working on is nearly complete; one last edit and it's finished. Then enter the executive editor, who makes a suggestion requiring a more-than-modest rearrangement of the design and the addition of an information box. You want to scream: "No! It's done!" What do you do?The first rule of saying no to the boss is "don't say no." (68) ______The second rule is "don't raise the stakes by challenging his authority." That issue is already decided. The third rule is "to be ready to cite options and consequences. The boss's suggestions might be appropriate, but there are always consequences. He might not know about the pages backing up that need attention, or about the designer who had to go home sick. Tell him he can have what he wants, but explain the consequences. Understand what he's trying to accomplish and propose a Plan B that will make ithappen without destroying what you've done so far. Here's another case. Your least-favorite reporter suggests a dumb story idea. (69) ______If you say no, even politely, you risk inhibiting further ideas, not just from that reporter, but from others who heard that you turned down the idea. This scenario is common in newsrooms that lack a systematic way to filter story suggestions. Two steps are necessary. First, you need a system for how stories are proposed and reviewed. Reporters can tolerate rejection of their ideas if they believe they were given a fair hearing. Your gut reaction and dismissive rejection, even of a worthless idea, might not qualify as systematic or fair.Second, the people you work with need to negotiate a "What if...?" agreement covering “What if my idea is turned down?”How are people expected to react? Is there an appeal process? Can they refine the idea and resubmit it? (70) ______.第II卷(共50分)IV. Summary Writing (10 分)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.71.Things to Do After You StudyMany students study with little thought about what comes after their study session. But what you do after studying could have an effect on how well you learn and remember new information. Actually, there are two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep. When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after you study may help you remember what you studied. The basic idea is this: by reducing your activity after the study session, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you have too much stimulation from electronic devices, games, lights and so on. Many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning 一what is called "wakeful rest." A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember, or recollect, information from prose passages after doing wakeful rest. The findings appeared in Neuroscience Letters. If you want to give "wakeful rest" a try, here are a few simple things to do: Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. Just limit the amount of stimulation you get. It is really that easy!In addition to wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that sleep helps people to learn. A report on the school's website explains that "a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently." It also says, "sleep itself has a role in the consolidation (巩固)of memory, which is essential for learning new information. Now you have two suggestions for how to learn new information. Try to get some "wakeful rest" afte r a study session. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That's it-- a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.V.Translation (3+3+4+5,共15 分)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72.对父母来说,最重要的是孩子每天平安归来。

Working people spend money on transportation to and from work and on various expenses throughout the day. Americans enjoy shopping and buy many things that they need and want. They spend a lot of money on entertainment. They buy sports equipment, to do sporting events and do many things that cost money. However, many Americans don‟t pay cash or write checks for these things. More and more, they pay for things with credit cards(信用卡).Credit cards are small, rectangular plastic cards. Banks give these cards to their customers. When the customer buys something at a store, he shows his card at the store. Then once a month the bank requires the customer to pay all the charges for that month. The bank does not force the customer to pay the full amount. It asks the customer to pay for the charges in several payments over a period of time. When did people first begin to use stamps? Who was the first to think of this idea?In the early nineteenth century, people did not use stamps. They had to pay postage(邮费)when they received letters. Sometimes they didn‟t want to receive a letter at all, but they had to pay money for it. They were unhappy about this. The postage was high at that time, because the post offices had to send many people to get the postage.Rowland Hill was a schoolteacher in England. He was the first to think of using stamps in 1850s. He thought it would be much easier for people to use stamps. People could go to the post office to buy stamps and put them on envelopes before they sent the letters. The post office could just put seals(邮戳)on the stamps so that people could not use the stamps again. In this way, the post office did not need to send postmen to get postage. Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.Birds, especially seagulls, are very fond of locusts, but birds cannot easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They areusually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks of trees. An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it, and it immediately swims away.
