Course Description:
The purpose of the course is to teach the students basic language features of English poetry and its translation strategy. Class instruction attaches equal importance to poetry translation theory and appreciation of English poetry. It combines poetry translation theory with appreciation of particular poems, that is, it analyzes English poetry in terms of rhyme, rhythm, style and poetics, with particular focus on the study of poetry form. Through this detailed analysis, the students are expected to understand linguistic features of English poetry, develop the feel for English poetic language and grasp basic poetry theories. More importantly, after appreciation and analysis of particular poetic texts, the students are supposed to understand in what manner English poetry, a particular genre in the field of arts, has achieved its purpose of communication, namely, to appeal to the readers aesthetically and inspire them ideologically. Basically, the course has three sessions: basic knowledge of English poetry, appreciation of English poems and exercises.
