AEven if you don’t have to work, eat or sleep, you won’t be able to get through all information on blogs and social networks. The problem we face is that much of this information seems very interesting at first glance. Actually, much of the information is unimportant, disposable and it distracts(分心) us from more meaningful pursuits. Worse still, when we spend lots of time consuming information from our social media streams,we may find it hard to concentrate on what we’re doing and we have a tendency to forget what we have consumed anyway.A new study from Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology has found that too much social media exposure actually reduces your ability to process information and depletes your short-term working memory. Our working memory plays a critical role in our capacity to filter information and remember what is valuable but it is not a limitless resource. Erik Fransén,a professor in Computer Science at KTH and the leader of this new study on social media overload says this can explain why our capacity for processing information begins to fail when we attempt to stuff more information in the working memory. In fact, when you try to process the information like speech or video, you are going to need partly the same system of working memory,so you are reducing your own working memory capacity.Andwhen you try to store many things in your working memory, you get less good at processing information. It is the periods of downtime of your brain—preferably disconnected from the distractions of your computer or smartphone—that are needed for memory consolidation and transferring important information to your exposure to new information. Besides, you can empty your mind of thoughts quickly to relax completely,go for a short walk or spend a few minutes listening to music. This will help you improve your capacity to process information and increase your productivity.1.What can we learn about social media overload from Paragraph 1?A.It distracts our attention.B.It is beneficial to us.C.It brings us whatever we want.D.It keeps us informed of everything.2.Why does your capacity for processing information begin fall sometimes?A.Much of the information is unimportant.B.You don’t make the most of your brain.C.You’re less good at processing information.D.Your working memory is a limited resource.3.What does the underlined word “downtime” in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Support. B.Relaxation.C.Increase.

阅读理解A(2020·合肥重点高中摸底)Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Most people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. An increasing number of people also report turning to social media for information. Now, there is a new technology that could greatly change the way we get the news: computer-created news readers. China has launched what it called the world’s first artificial intelligence, or AI news presenters. The news readers, supported by machine learning technology, are based on two real life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present news broadcast in English; the other, in Mandarin Chinese. A report said machine learning was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. Similar technology has been used to create video products known as “deepfake videos”. A deepfake video is a video that looks real, but is electronically changed. Such videos can make people appear to say things they never said. It’s said that the AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they “can work 24 hours a day” on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even promised to “work tirelessly”to keep people informed. Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China’s latest progress in voice recognition, text to speech technology and data analysis.Others wondered about the effects robots might have on employment and workers. Some people argued that only low level jobs requiring heavy labor will be easily replaced by robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from lowcost labor machines.Anyway, for its great potential, some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了人工智能新闻主播的相关内容。

【2019-2020】高考英语一轮题型练Unit11TheMedia(含解析)北师大版必修4李仕才一、阅读理解AIn bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they teach, their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.1.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ______.A. should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make him lose interest in learning new things2.In the process of children’s learning new sk ills, parents ______.A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB. should not expect too much of themC. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD. should create as many learning opportunities as possible3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that ______.A. parents should be strict with their childrenB.C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always intended for the benefit of the children aloneD. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation4.In moral matters, parents should _______.A. observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC. forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD. consistently ensure the security of their children【文章大意】在孩子的成长过程中,父母的教育与期望值要有一个“度”,不能揠苗助长;同时,父母也要以身作则,为孩子树立一个榜样。

A doctor may advise medical interventions(医疗干预) in addition to changes in behavior. But experts say the more successful weight-loss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise.People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, or increase the number you use, or both. Experts at the National Institutes of Health say to lose weight, a person should do some moderate or intensive physical exercise most days of the week. This could include fast walking, sports or strength training.A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the United States. Researchers at Stanford University studied more than three hundred overweight women, mostly in their thirties or forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins, The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans. At the end of a year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and a half kilograms on average.Christopher Gardner led the study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He said the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to lower the intake of sugar. Also, he said the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. But last week, another report suggested that only a small minority of people have long-term success in dieting. Researchers at the University of California found that most dieters regained their lost weight within five years. And often they gained back even more. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.语篇定位本文是一篇议论文。
